Major Research And Education Activities Of The Project
The research being conducted over the past year is an effort to examine e-medicine transfer in Sub-Saharan Africa. We sought to conduct the research and collect data from Cameroon; however, through our new partnerships we also collected data from Uganda and Ghana. Extending the research to other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa allowed a comparison our research findings and an examination of the strength of our conclusions. Under the supervision of Prof. Victor Mbarika, Dr. Carlos Thomas and Dr. Richard Boateng, the research activities were primarily carried out by graduate and undergraduate research students who collaborated with students in participating institutions in Cameroon, Uganda and Ghana.
Students were asked to complete an application form and submit an essay on the why they wanted to participate on in program. Three graduates and two undergraduate US students were initially selected covering majors in business, journalism and law. However, the two US undergraduates dropped out of the program due to the unavailability to travel to Africa for the data collection. Hence, only the three US graduate students completed the all research activities for 2009/2010. The three US graduate students, LaKenya Simspon, Shayla Price and Brenda Wu, were paired with non-US undergraduates and two-non US graduate students to offer an interactive cultural education and a preliminary experience of actively working with different cultures.
Four graduate students worked on the project in Cameroon and Uganda. Two of the graduate students also worked on the project in Ghana. The graduate students conducted the literature review, data collection and analysis and case study report writing. The undergraduate students worked on collecting and categorizing literature from academic databases and also developing and maintaining platform for the streaming of multimedia videos. Students completed a two week research session which was structured to include mobile commerce, telemedicine and research methods seminars and a training session in video photography.
